What to Wear for Your Family Session
A Styling Guide from The Freckled Photographer
1. Start with a Color Palette
- Choose 2–3 main colors and 1–2 neutrals.
- Think earthy tones, soft pastels, or muted jewel tones—these photograph beautifully outdoors.
- Example palettes:
- Neutral + Warm: Cream, beige, olive, rust
- Soft & Airy: Blush, dusty blue, light gray, ivory
- Bold but Balanced: Navy, mustard, denim, tan
📌 Tip: Lay outfits out together to see how they flow as a group before session day.
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
- Avoid everyone in the same shirt & jeans.
- Instead, mix textures & layers while keeping within the same palette.
- Example: Mom in a flowy dress, Dad in chinos + button-up, kids in complementary colors.
3. Dress for the Season
- Spring/Summer: Flowy dresses, linen shirts, light colors.
- Fall/Winter: Layers, cozy knits, boots, earthy tones.
4. Keep Patterns Minimal
- A small floral, subtle stripes, or plaid on one person can add interest.
- Avoid loud logos, neon colors, or busy prints (they distract from your faces).
5. Think About Movement
- Choose outfits you can move, sit, and play in.
- Flowy fabrics look beautiful in motion.
- Avoid stiff or uncomfortable clothing—kids especially will hate it.
6. Shoes Matter
- Neutral boots, sandals, or simple sneakers work best.
- Skip flip-flops, bright athletic shoes, or anything too flashy.
7. Final Touches
- Accessories: Hats, scarves, or layered jewelry can add personality.
- Grooming: Make sure nails are clean, hair is brushed, and faces are free of snacks. 😉
- Bring: Touch-up lipstick, a hairbrush, water for little ones.
What NOT to Wear
- Neon or super bright colors (they cast color on skin).
- Distracting logos or characters.
- Everyone in all white or all black (can look flat in photos).
- Clothes that don’t fit comfortably.
Quick Formula for Success
- Pick mom’s outfit first (something flattering & comfortable).
- Build the family’s outfits around hers.
- Stay within the chosen palette & mix in textures.
- Pinterest is a beautiful resource for inspiration on family outfits. Pay attention the different patterns and textures used in the photos. Matching without all wearing the same thing is what really makes family photos feel cohesive and styled.
