Maternity Session Guide

I love maternity photos, partly because I'm a mama myself and know what it's like to be swollen and miserable but want pictures to document the slide event! One of my biggest joys is making you feel stunning when you just want to cry all the time. Trust me I get it. Mama-to-be, your glow deserves to be captured! Here’s everything you need to know to get the most out of your maternity photoshoot:

📅 When to Book:

It never hurts to contact your photographer and actually schedule the photoshoot far in advance! Do not wait until last minute in case of the horrific event of the photographer not being available during your prime. The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 30–34 weeks—you’ll have a beautiful bump and still feel comfortable enough to move around. You can take them after 34 weeks, there is no rule; however, take it from me who had a singleton and twins, after about that 34 week mark you are DONE and no not want to be on the other side of a camera. Often you begin swelling and become very uncomfortable and I want you to feel the best you possibly can during your session. I do have clients still feel fine and book for 36 weeks so that they have a nice round bump but ultimately you know your body and baby and what works best for you!

👗 What to Wear:

Choose something that highlights your bump—think flowy dresses, body-hugging gowns, or soft neutral tones that complement your natural beauty. Avoid busy patterns or logos. Neutrals like black, white, and tan are always safe bets. Take into account what the vibe you are aiming for is. Are you looking for something elegant and moody? Go with something like a body-con dress. Want more laid back? Jeans unbuttoned and either a crop top or button up shirt are a fun option! Like the flower child vibes? Flowey dresses are my jam and fun to use in poses and candids.

👕 What Your Partner Should Wear:

Simple and classic is best! Neutrals, earthy tones, or solid colors that complement your outfit will keep the focus on the connection. Avoid graphic tees or loud prints. Your partner should be in a color that complements your outfit, not tries to rival it. If you are wearing a pink dress, try matching your partner in something brown or tan rather than trying to dress your partner in the same shade of pink. We want the focus of these photos to be mama and baby; not that dad isn't important, but these are about remembering this incredible milestone of you and your baby's life.

👜 What to Bring:

  • Extra outfits if you want variety

If we are doing photos in water like a creek, bring an extra change of clothes just in case so that you do not have to ride home in your wet clothes! If you are wearing "outfit shoes" bring some comfy walking shoes too because we may have to walk a short ways to the location.

  • Touch-up makeup or a hairbrush
  • Water & snacks (especially if we’re on location!)
  • Any special items (like ultrasound pics, baby shoes, or signs)

🚫 What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t try a brand-new hairstyle or heavy makeup look you’ve never worn
  • Don’t wear tight socks or elastic before the shoot (they leave marks!)
  • Don’t stress—we’ll make it relaxed and fun ✨
